Çeksan Shipyard Unveils Next-Generation Environmentally Friendly Chemical Tanker Concept
Çeksan launches a new era in sustainable maritime transportation with the NEOCLEAN TANKERS series
Çeksan Shipyard is bringing to life a next-generation vessel project that will contribute to the global transformation of the maritime industry toward reducing carbon emissions. The shipyard is commencing construction of the first vessel in the NEOCLEAN TANKERS series, developed as part of its fourth-generation environmentally friendly and high-efficiency chemical tanker concept. To be built under hull number NB85, the vessel will offer an advanced engineering solution for the future of sustainable maritime transportation through its hybrid energy infrastructure, modular battery system, and zero-emission port operations.
The NEOCLEAN series will be operated by NEO TANKER Maritime BV, a subsidiary of ÇEKSAN.

Developed at a time when emission reduction targets are becoming increasingly critical across the international maritime industry, the NEOCLEAN TANKERS series combines environmental sustainability with high operational efficiency. The new-generation vessel, whose research, development, and design have been carried out by Turkish engineers, will be built under the classification of Türk Loydu, Türkiye's national classification society. Designed with a flexible infrastructure capable of meeting today's operational requirements while accommodating future energy technologies, the project offers a long-term vision for sustainable maritime transportation.
The first vessel, measuring approximately 109.5 metres in length and 17 metres in breadth, with a deadweight capacity of 7,800 tonnes, will provide approximately 8,800 cubic metres of cargo capacity for the transportation of chemical products. The vessel will achieve a maximum speed of 12 knots and an economical cruising speed of 10.5 knots, with accommodation for 18 crew members.
The vessel's energy system is based on an approximately 10 MWh lithium-ion battery installation, supported by six 555 kWe generators. This configuration is expected to enable operations with a fuel consumption as low as approximately 7 tonnes per hour, significantly improving operational efficiency.
One of the key features distinguishing the NEOCLEAN TANKERS series from comparable projects is its future-ready energy architecture. While the vessel will initially be equipped with approximately 10 MWh of battery capacity, its design allows for expansion to a total capacity of 25 MWh. Through the use of containerized battery modules, the capacity can be increased to 15, 20, or 25 MWh either during construction or at any stage throughout the vessel's operational lifetime, depending on operational requirements.
One of the vessel's most notable environmental features is its zero-emission capability during port operations. The project has been designed so that port entry, cargo discharge, and departure can be carried out entirely on battery power, significantly reducing environmental impact during port operations, where emissions and noise levels are typically at their highest.
Furthermore, the vessel will be equipped with infrastructure compliant with cold ironing notation requirements, enabling it to recharge its batteries using shore power. This will allow the vessel to continue operations while alongside without the need to run its generators.
The project also incorporates engineering solutions that enhance energy efficiency. A silicone-based environmentally friendly hull coating system, together with an optimised hull form and a custom-designed propeller and rudder system, will contribute to reducing both fuel consumption and carbon emissions.
Steel cutting for the first vessel, Hull No. NB85, is scheduled to commence in September 2026, with commercial operations targeted to begin before the end of 2027. Through the NEOCLEAN TANKERS series, Çeksan Shipyard once again demonstrates its engineering expertise in environmentally friendly ship technologies while continuing to develop innovative solutions for sustainable maritime transportation.
